Gold filled jewellery

There are three main terms used to describe the quality of gold jewellery - solid gold, gold filled and gold plated.

Solid gold is an item that is 100% gold. Gold filled is the next level and is an excellent (and economical) alternative to solid gold. Gold plating is the lowest level and these are the items than can tarnish or react with skin.

Gold filled is an actual layer of gold bonded using pressure to another metal and utilises more than double the gold of gold plating.  It is composed of a solid layer of gold which must constitute at least 5% of the item's total weight. Gold filled is therefore more valuable and tarnish resistant than gold plated items. Anyone who can wear gold can wear gold filled without worry of a skin reaction.
